GEO: Why your site needs to be optimized for AI search engines.

Over the past 18 months, a new category of search has emerged: generative AI answer engines. Perplexity, SearchGPT by OpenAI, and Google's own AI Overviews now answer questions directly from web content, bypassing the traditional ten-blue-links format. A page that ranks well on Google can be invisible to these systems, and vice versa.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems can reliably extract, cite, and present it in their responses. It is not a replacement for traditional SEO — it is an additional layer that addresses how AI crawlers consume and reason about content differently.

How AI search engines consume content

Traditional search crawlers evaluate pages primarily through links, keywords, and authority signals. AI search engines process content through a different pipeline: they parse the page, extract factual claims, evaluate confidence, and present a synthesized answer with citations. This means:

  • Structured data matters more. Schema.org markup that explicitly declares addresses, prices, dates, FAQs, and reviews gives an AI engine clear signals about what a page contains.
  • Conversational question-answer formats. Pages that directly answer common questions in natural language are more likely to be cited by generative systems.
  • Crawlable document hierarchy. A clear H1-H2-H3 structure, short paragraphs, and scannable sections make it easier for LLMs to extract and attribute specific claims.
  • Page speed and Core Web Vitals. AI crawlers operate under token budgets. A slow or bloated page is skipped more often than a fast one, just as with traditional search.

Practical steps for GEO

The most effective change is also the simplest: add FAQ schema with real questions your customers ask, presented in the natural language they use. An AI engine citing your FAQ page as a direct answer to a user query is the GEO equivalent of a featured snippet on Google.

Beyond schema, the structure of the page itself matters. AI engines prefer content that is scannable, directly answers the query early, and uses plain language over marketing copy. Pages that start with throat-clearing phrases like "In today's fast-paced digital landscape" are less likely to be cited than pages that start with a specific claim or a direct answer to a question.

Where GEO is heading

As AI search engines mature, the gap between traditional SEO and GEO will widen. Systems like Perplexity and SearchGPT are already citing original research, data-driven content, and authoritative sources over generic informational pages. The competitive advantage goes to sites that publish specific, verifiable claims rather than generic descriptions.
